Wonder Woman by David Michael Beck

David Michael Beck made a big splash with his work on the Devil's Due G.I. Joe comics about a decade back, but he seems to have moved on to more lucrative commercial art outside our field. This nifty Princess Diana sketch was posted at Comic Art Fans in 2009, and a more fully realized piece with the Amazing Amazon is linked below. Check out his website here.

JLA/Cyberforce (2005)

In Budapest, Hungary, a cave-in revealed catacombs under the city lower than any recorded that had been sealed off for ages. The military was called in to investigate, and an entire unit was slaughtered by an unknown force. These and other troops were resurrected as something like robo-zombies, "returned to a godforsaken semblance of 'life' by viral organic technology. Resurrected to serve a monster... who was once the spiritual center of a close-knit family..." This being Ripclaw of the Image Comics team Cyberforce.

Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, the Flash and the Martian Manhunter fought their way through "undead technoslaves" to investigate the catacombs before being encountered by the aforementioned cybernetically enhanced super team. "We're the Justice League. We're here to help... unless you're in league with these demons, in which case you will suffer immediate and real consequences. The team's leader, Stryker, was flabbergasted and bashful. His teammate Ballistic snickered, "Not like you don't run around with three half-naked women all day. Stow your hormones..." Batman and Cyblade flirted over martial arts moves, Stryker and Superman butted heads over extreme sanctions, Velocity and Martian Manhunter bonded over being emo, and Wonder Woman got all amazonian with Ballistic. "Back to the pits with you! And may Hades take mercy on your souls..."
"What she said... only hold the god junk."
"I know Hades personally. You would do well to hold your tongue."
"And you'd 'do well' to put on some armor if you're gonna get in a gunfight."

The members of Cyberforce felt the call of "godtech," organic alien technology responsible for their creation and Ripclaw's turning evil. An orb of the stuff was Ripclaw's goal, and he tried to disembowel Superman to reach it. To save Stryker and in retaliation, Wonder Woman severed Ripclaw's left arm with her Lasso of Truth. While Ripclaw kept up his offensive, the arm snuck off to claim the orb, turning him into a giant version of himself constantly spawning standard-sized clones. A group effort defeated Ripclaw, but not before Martian Manhunter was seemingly killed by a technological infection.

The orb remained as a potential cure for J'Onn J'Onzz, but its single use remaining power was already earmarked to cure Ripclaw of evil. Normal people would think a fatality would trump a needed attitude adjustment, but Cyberforce still put up a fight over the orb. Ballistic managed to get loose of Diana's lasso and play bullets and bracelets with machine guns. Wonder Woman warned that Ballistic should "pray," not for forgiveness, but that she should "have enough bullets." Ballistic whined that the Amazing Amazon wouldn't miss a shot. "You first." Her ammo finally ran out, but not her curse words. From behind smoldering bracelets, Diana simply said "Indeed."

Velocity finally womaned-up and saved the Martian Manhunter, so everyone made nice. "...And people wonder... why I prefer... non-violence." Her own hands burning up, Ballistic dropped her arms. "You said it, sister..."

Later, outside the Watchtower on the moon, J'Onn J'Onzz took a stroll "in the cold vacuum of space." Wonder Woman paid him a visit, wearing only a rebreather, as the team was concerned about the Martian Manhunter's unusual behavior. "For a few minutes, my consciousness was no longer tied to physical realms... I guess I needed some 'fresh air.' Watchtower felt like a coffin." J'Onn and Diana had a nice bonding moment discussing J'Onn's near death experience.

As usual for a modern comic, the Amazon aspect of Wonder Woman was overplayed to the point of having her chopping people up and sending them to Hell. It was still pretty solid for an intercompany crossover involving a highly derivative and typically directionless Image super group. It was by the former JLA creative team of Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke, with inconsistent but sometimes stellar inks by Norm Rapmund.

Jaimie Alexander on Wonder Woman in Maxim Magazine

jamie alexander,wonder woman

From Maxim Online

Once she caught our eye on TV shows like Nurse Jackie, Bones, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, we guessed it would be only a matter of time before Jaimie Alexander made a splash on the big screen. What we hadn’t counted on was her doing it in the form of a beautiful Asgardian goddess in this summer’s epic blockbuster Thor...

What other heroes would you like to play?
I always loved Wonder Woman. But now that I’ve played Sif, I feel like Sif is a little classier. Maybe don’t write that…

“Jaimie Alexander Calls Wonder Woman a Tramp.” That’s our headline, right there.
Oh, God! Yeah, what a hussy!

The colored commissions (drawn using those marvelous COPIC markers) were for a couple of guys who had asked me for them a year or so back. I've finally gotten the opportunity to get to them so that I don't feel so guilty every time I see them at the shows. I hope they like them okay. Apologies for the wait, fellas - thanks for your patience.

Wonder Woman Annual #5 (1996)

EARTH IS DEAD.

Those who once might have called it home are long scattered to the endless stars.

But in that scattering, on a thousand different worlds, by a thousand different ways... Earth's greatest legends live on.
LEGENDS OF THE
DEAD EARTH

A giant starship coasted through space. From a distance, it might appear majestic, but within and without it was well worn by untold time. Strange creatures eked out an existence aboard the craft-- winged sharks, giant spiders, all of some shared ancestry.

AlyXa appeared to be human as we know it. Aside from black markings about her eyes, she could be mistaken for an eighteen year old woman playing Pocahontas. At six foot and 120 pounds, she was quite the prize of her tribe. Her intelligence, curiosity and bravery were less heralded, as they had sent her to explore unfamiliar parts of the ship (though the Unremembered had no conception of the craft they existed within.) AlyXa was now lost and hunted by ratbats and other beasts, their long tongues pursuing her even into a narrow ductway. AlyXa made her escape, and was surprised to see her reflection in statues she found-- in fact the helmets of spacesuits.

The Unremembered were the last human race anyone was aware of, and they lived a savage life of subsistence. Speaking only in clicking sounds, their men were hunters who resented the women workers for continuing to produce resource draining offspring. Clearly the women did this out of carelessness and spite, with the blameless men deserving their elevated position in the hierarchy.

ValXan knew AlyXa wasn't some petty creature like other women, and led a party in search of his runaway bride. KarXyn got slapped for suggesting there were other fish in the sea, while CatXon held his tongue about his own more progress views of the fairer sex. The party was set upon by ratbats, whom they killed while sustaining only minor injury.

That night, KarXyn told tales of the long ago times over a campfire, recalling variations of Superman, Hawkman, the Flash, Batman and Green Lantern. These peculiar ancestral heroes even counted females among their numbers, with takes on Wonder Woman and Catwoman depicted. Humanity's departure from its birth world to the "stars" (whatever those terms met) was recounted, as was the terrible accident aboard their vessel that sent the survivors back to the stone ages. OlXus, a wizened elder, pointed out the common ancestry between the Unremembered and the ratbats, tracing back far beyond the point of recollection.

AlyXa found an advanced laboratory, where for the first time she saw a female ratbat. The creature operated a device that sent signals into its mind powerful enough for AlyXa to pick up on some of them. AlyXa saw visions of Wonder Woman, soaring unaided through the sky, swatting bullets with bracelets, saving the sick and the needy. Wonder Woman battled evils like the Cheetah and Doomsday. It was incredible to behold. After the ratbat stood up unsteadily and departed, AlyXa copied her motions to reactivate the machine. AlyXa saw herself as Wonder Woman, "amazed to find herself accepted as an equal by the men whose power she rivals and exceeds!" To the left of Wonder AlyXa was Superman, and Martian Manhunter was on the right, which was surely intentional.

AlyXa's vision continued, offering a history of ratbat culture, which accepted females as equals and conserved resources well enough to allow for unrestricted offspring. These were no savage beasts, but a society in many ways more advanced than that of the Unremembered. However, the search party caught portions of this psychic story in the manner AlyXa had with the ratbat, and the horrified group attempted to slaughter a ratbat village. Cornering a group of children, the murder was haulted by a ratbat female dressed in a ragged approximation of Wonder Woman's costume. The warrior female tore into the hunting party, defeating the lot before turning around and arguing to save their lives from other vengeful ratbats.

ValXan saw this as an opportunity, retrieved a spear, and pressed it against Wonder Ratbat. A sword soon pressed to ValXan breast, held by AlyXa. "This female is not our enemy, "she clicked. "None of the ratbats are!" They fought only to protect their own, and were as distant kin to the Unremembered. AlyXa made peace with a grateful Wonder Ratbat, and shamed the hunting party into recognizing the faults in her people's ways. If ever the worldship finally landed on an inhabitable planet, both species and all genders would have to share it as equals. "A world such as was prophesied by the first, true Wonder Woman."

"The Unremembered" was by John Byrne, Dave Cockrum and Norm Breyfogle. Cockrum's trademark stiffness was nicely smoothed over by Breygogle, who benefited from Dave's more fleshed out figures while offering softening embellishment. The only weird thing was that on the few pages featuring the classic Wonder Woman, the combination looked like Mike Collins, of all people.

JLA/WildC.A.T.S. "Crime Machine" (1997)

Kid Flash Wally West was attacked by Epoch, the Lord of Time, who possessed a constantly evolving armor from millenia in the future. West was rescued by the JLA of his future, consisting of the electric blue Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, and Wally himself as the adult Flash (whom he mistook for Barry Allen.) The JLA continued to battle epoch across time, involving a brush with the Justice Society in 1944, before getting stranded by a lost temporal drive unit in A.D. 33. Diana figured, "It's still here... He left the drive unit in the past so it musy still be here. Like dinosaur bones and coal." Green Lantern figured it for an easy find with his power ring, but it was the eighth or ninth anachronistic object located in a global search. Marcus Aelius, the future Alpha Centurion, happened to spot the JLA dig it up. The League channeled its collective willpower through Lantern's ring, and reactivated the drive to return "home."

Instead, the League landed in the Wildstorm Universe, having caused rampant gen-activation of previously non-powered humans who the proceeded to wreck havoc on this alternate Earth. The Wild Covert Action Teams and other Wildstorm super groups tried to contain the chaos and locate its source. WildC.A.T.s leader Mister Majestic was less than diplomatic upon finding the displaced JLA and laying blame at their feet, so a fight broke out. Superman threw the first punch at Majestros, followed by Batman socking Maul and disarming Grifter. The former went on to battle Green Lantern, actually disabling Rayner through a slow-acting spinal pinch before being finished off by the Dark Knight. The latter realized he was in over his head against real hero types, and sat out further hostilities. The Flash and Void also managed to talk their way to a solution.

Wonder Woman had to deal with Zealot, a caricature of the most bloodthirsty take on Diana and the Amazons, by way of the sisterhood of the Coda, "finest" all-female warrior caste in the galaxy. The Amazing Amazon repeatedly blocked slashing swords with her bracelets, demanding Zealot drop her weapon. "You're not a warrior, you're a coward. Throw down your weapon and face me with your bare hands." Infuriated, Zealot followed suit. "Fine. Now, before this continues, I'd like to suggest something... How about we stop fighting, we stop calling one another names and we try talking like rational, intelligent women? It's not difficult." Zealot wasn't open to such suggestions, and had to be punched through a wall. "...Stubborn! Why are you being so stubborn? We can fight and fight and fight and I will not fall, I promise you... I haven't even started on you. So... one more time: Talk." Having had enough, Zealot finally laughed and admitted, "You're okay."

As per the comic book constitution, the groups ironed out their differences and teamed up to stop the troubles surrounding them. With the help of Void and some other-dimensional friends, the teams traveled to DC Earth. In five days' time, Epoch had trapped all the other heroes on the moon, unleashed a plague of alien invaders, and merged with a 68th Century Omega Attractor. The two teams assaulted his base, tore through his defenses, and Zealot dropped a "Tom and Jerry" reference. Wonder Woman muttered, "Both our universes have Tom and Jerry? What are the chances of... Hera! What's that... noise?" Maul had grown big enough to wreck Epoch's operation, and his perfect strategies against the JLA wouldn't work against the unknown element of the WildC.A.T.s. Epoch was fated to rule the world, but he missed the minor detail of it being for about a week, until the JLA trapped what was left of him in a circular temporal prison.

Everything fixed, the two teams were split back up between their two worlds. Wonder Woman offered to Zealot, "We could use more women like you on our world..."
"One's generally enough for any world."

I remember liking and defending this book when I read it in 1997, within the first year of the JLA series. Grant Morrison was great with scale, unleashed torrents of technobabble, and I felt he handled both teams correctly with respect. Revisited nearly fifteen years later, the script seems a bit too flippant and definitely runs too long, with the Wildstorm characters given short shrift. If anything, the art by Val Semeiks and Kevin Conrad is even worse than I remembered. Semeiks was one of the worst artists getting mainstream work at the time, and he got a lot of work on JLA projects after this, before Mark Pajarillo did his best to take his place in every unfortunate respect. I really did like Morrison's take on Diana as a tough as nails peace negotiator, a far cry from the brutal harpy other writers would portray after the JLA franchise began to go off the rails.

April Fool's Day Blogging

I've been kind of peeved at Google lately. A recent update screwed up my March Madness polls, my scheduled posts keep resetting to unpublished drafts, and even the words I type right now are the result of some coding snafu destroying my first draft of this paragraph. I'm going to go study this weekend, and offer this post recapping holiday shenanigans that never came up on my own Google Reader.

The Irredeemable Shag is usually the ringleader of these April Fool's goofs, and first suggested a 2011 edition in January. His mailing list then promptly forgot all about it, Shag included, or bowed out early. Out of the blue on March 19th, Boosterrific announced that he was going ahead with the plan, and several of us ostriches pulled our heads out of the sand and went, "Oh? Well, okay, I think I'll join you."

The premise this year was to convert your entire blog into something different, devoting it to some obscure property that you have an affection for. Shag of course went the most gloriously nuts by converting Firestorm Fan into B'wana Beast's Blog, dedicated to the curious prevalence of a virtual nonentity for forty years into an enduring cartoon guest star (Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold.) Shag created ten entirely new posts, including Why a B’wana Beast Blog?, B’wana Beast in Who’s Who 1985, B’wana Beast gets animated!, Best B’wana Beast Covers of All Time, B’wana Beast Action Figures, POLL: B’wana Beast or Freedom Beast?, B’wana Beast Cosplay at DragonCon 2010*, B’wana Beast Temporary Tattoo, Napoleon Dynamite’s Liger – B’wana Beast’s Greatest Achievement? and my personal favorite, the fan fictional B’wana Beast and Beta Ray Bill – Marvel vs DC Amalgam.
*Caution: May require Kleenex after viewing, regardless of gender

Boosterrific was the one bringing this back, so he sure as heck brought it, with Red Star Fire, the most famous Communist at DC Comics replacing the capitalist running dog Booster Gold. I adore old Soviet bloc propaganda imagery, so the design of the blog alone had me drooling. I don't know how long it will be up at 100%, but it should be accessible through the weekend. If not, the direct link to the permanent content is here.I very much approved of his offering the people a weekly poll to explain what their correct opinion should be, as it was pre-rigged.

Kelson's Speed Force briefly turned Cobalt Blue over: Cobalt Blue, Classic Rogue?, The Flash vs…Barry Allen? The Bronze-Age Origin of Cobalt Blue, “Seeing” Blue: TV’s Cobalt Blue Prototype, Flash Facts: Cobalt Blue, Cobalt Blue T-Shirt Available Exclusively At VA Comicon, Who Is Hot Pursuit, REALLY?

Liquidcross briefly lost the reins to the Indigo Tribe blog to Flash rogue Roscoe Dillon, who tried to prove Nobody Tops the Top. That is, until he found himself Dead and loving it.

Always handy as a bulking agent, I converted five of my own blogs, like Diana Prince as the New Wonder Woman into Wundercar Valkyrie!, dedicated to the Nazi aviation from '40s Hillman, '80s Eclipse, and '00s Moonstone comics. That one was mostly pin-ups and pieces from aborted coverage of one of her mini-series.

DC Bloodlines became Marshal Law's San Futuro Police Blog, revolving around synopsizes of the very mature and anti-superhero first six issue mini-series, plus a few extras. It's actually relevant, since DC (of all places) will be reissuing the series.

Power of the Atom was given over to Dreadstar & Company, a childhood favorite creator owned science fantasy series by Jim Starlin. That one was stocked with remembrances, pin-ups, and crudely glued together custom Overpower cards from when I was younger and even more poor.

I had already planned a fan fiction 1995 Manhunter from Mars Annual #12 and some new icons for the sidebar, but The Aviary of the Osprey kind of laid an egg in terms of raw material in replacing The Idol-Head of Diabolu.

I was running on fumes by the time Vibe's Beat Street Blog spun off from Justice League Detroit. That one was cobbled together, like many of the other blogs, from old crap on my ...nurgh... blog from when I did more there than comic book and movie review. Since I already cover Vibe's stories there, that one descended into music videos, pop-lock educationals, and a look back at 1983's D.C. Cab. Apologies for scrapping the bottle of the barrel on that.
