JLA/WildC.A.T.S. "Crime Machine" (1997)

Kid Flash Wally West was attacked by Epoch, the Lord of Time, who possessed a constantly evolving armor from millenia in the future. West was rescued by the JLA of his future, consisting of the electric blue Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, and Wally himself as the adult Flash (whom he mistook for Barry Allen.) The JLA continued to battle epoch across time, involving a brush with the Justice Society in 1944, before getting stranded by a lost temporal drive unit in A.D. 33. Diana figured, "It's still here... He left the drive unit in the past so it musy still be here. Like dinosaur bones and coal." Green Lantern figured it for an easy find with his power ring, but it was the eighth or ninth anachronistic object located in a global search. Marcus Aelius, the future Alpha Centurion, happened to spot the JLA dig it up. The League channeled its collective willpower through Lantern's ring, and reactivated the drive to return "home."

Instead, the League landed in the Wildstorm Universe, having caused rampant gen-activation of previously non-powered humans who the proceeded to wreck havoc on this alternate Earth. The Wild Covert Action Teams and other Wildstorm super groups tried to contain the chaos and locate its source. WildC.A.T.s leader Mister Majestic was less than diplomatic upon finding the displaced JLA and laying blame at their feet, so a fight broke out. Superman threw the first punch at Majestros, followed by Batman socking Maul and disarming Grifter. The former went on to battle Green Lantern, actually disabling Rayner through a slow-acting spinal pinch before being finished off by the Dark Knight. The latter realized he was in over his head against real hero types, and sat out further hostilities. The Flash and Void also managed to talk their way to a solution.

Wonder Woman had to deal with Zealot, a caricature of the most bloodthirsty take on Diana and the Amazons, by way of the sisterhood of the Coda, "finest" all-female warrior caste in the galaxy. The Amazing Amazon repeatedly blocked slashing swords with her bracelets, demanding Zealot drop her weapon. "You're not a warrior, you're a coward. Throw down your weapon and face me with your bare hands." Infuriated, Zealot followed suit. "Fine. Now, before this continues, I'd like to suggest something... How about we stop fighting, we stop calling one another names and we try talking like rational, intelligent women? It's not difficult." Zealot wasn't open to such suggestions, and had to be punched through a wall. "...Stubborn! Why are you being so stubborn? We can fight and fight and fight and I will not fall, I promise you... I haven't even started on you. So... one more time: Talk." Having had enough, Zealot finally laughed and admitted, "You're okay."

As per the comic book constitution, the groups ironed out their differences and teamed up to stop the troubles surrounding them. With the help of Void and some other-dimensional friends, the teams traveled to DC Earth. In five days' time, Epoch had trapped all the other heroes on the moon, unleashed a plague of alien invaders, and merged with a 68th Century Omega Attractor. The two teams assaulted his base, tore through his defenses, and Zealot dropped a "Tom and Jerry" reference. Wonder Woman muttered, "Both our universes have Tom and Jerry? What are the chances of... Hera! What's that... noise?" Maul had grown big enough to wreck Epoch's operation, and his perfect strategies against the JLA wouldn't work against the unknown element of the WildC.A.T.s. Epoch was fated to rule the world, but he missed the minor detail of it being for about a week, until the JLA trapped what was left of him in a circular temporal prison.

Everything fixed, the two teams were split back up between their two worlds. Wonder Woman offered to Zealot, "We could use more women like you on our world..."
"One's generally enough for any world."

I remember liking and defending this book when I read it in 1997, within the first year of the JLA series. Grant Morrison was great with scale, unleashed torrents of technobabble, and I felt he handled both teams correctly with respect. Revisited nearly fifteen years later, the script seems a bit too flippant and definitely runs too long, with the Wildstorm characters given short shrift. If anything, the art by Val Semeiks and Kevin Conrad is even worse than I remembered. Semeiks was one of the worst artists getting mainstream work at the time, and he got a lot of work on JLA projects after this, before Mark Pajarillo did his best to take his place in every unfortunate respect. I really did like Morrison's take on Diana as a tough as nails peace negotiator, a far cry from the brutal harpy other writers would portray after the JLA franchise began to go off the rails.

April Fool's Day Blogging

I've been kind of peeved at Google lately. A recent update screwed up my March Madness polls, my scheduled posts keep resetting to unpublished drafts, and even the words I type right now are the result of some coding snafu destroying my first draft of this paragraph. I'm going to go study this weekend, and offer this post recapping holiday shenanigans that never came up on my own Google Reader.

The Irredeemable Shag is usually the ringleader of these April Fool's goofs, and first suggested a 2011 edition in January. His mailing list then promptly forgot all about it, Shag included, or bowed out early. Out of the blue on March 19th, Boosterrific announced that he was going ahead with the plan, and several of us ostriches pulled our heads out of the sand and went, "Oh? Well, okay, I think I'll join you."

The premise this year was to convert your entire blog into something different, devoting it to some obscure property that you have an affection for. Shag of course went the most gloriously nuts by converting Firestorm Fan into B'wana Beast's Blog, dedicated to the curious prevalence of a virtual nonentity for forty years into an enduring cartoon guest star (Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold.) Shag created ten entirely new posts, including Why a B’wana Beast Blog?, B’wana Beast in Who’s Who 1985, B’wana Beast gets animated!, Best B’wana Beast Covers of All Time, B’wana Beast Action Figures, POLL: B’wana Beast or Freedom Beast?, B’wana Beast Cosplay at DragonCon 2010*, B’wana Beast Temporary Tattoo, Napoleon Dynamite’s Liger – B’wana Beast’s Greatest Achievement? and my personal favorite, the fan fictional B’wana Beast and Beta Ray Bill – Marvel vs DC Amalgam.

Boosterrific was the one bringing this back, so he sure as heck brought it, with Red Star Fire, the most famous Communist at DC Comics replacing the capitalist running dog Booster Gold. I adore old Soviet bloc propaganda imagery, so the design of the blog alone had me drooling. I don't know how long it will be up at 100%, but it should be accessible through the weekend. If not, the direct link to the permanent content is here.I very much approved of his offering the people a weekly poll to explain what their correct opinion should be, as it was pre-rigged.

Liquidcross briefly lost the reins to the Indigo Tribe blog to Flash rogue Roscoe Dillon, who tried to prove Nobody Tops the Top. That is, until he found himself Dead and loving it.

Always handy as a bulking agent, I converted five of my own blogs, like Diana Prince as the New Wonder Woman into Wundercar Valkyrie!, dedicated to the Nazi aviation from '40s Hillman, '80s Eclipse, and '00s Moonstone comics. That one was mostly pin-ups and pieces from aborted coverage of one of her mini-series.

DC Bloodlines became Marshal Law's San Futuro Police Blog, revolving around synopsizes of the very mature and anti-superhero first six issue mini-series, plus a few extras. It's actually relevant, since DC (of all places) will be reissuing the series.

Power of the Atom was given over to Dreadstar & Company, a childhood favorite creator owned science fantasy series by Jim Starlin. That one was stocked with remembrances, pin-ups, and crudely glued together custom Overpower cards from when I was younger and even more poor.

I had already planned a fan fiction 1995 Manhunter from Mars Annual #12 and some new icons for the sidebar, but The Aviary of the Osprey kind of laid an egg in terms of raw material in replacing The Idol-Head of Diabolu.

I was running on fumes by the time Vibe's Beat Street Blog spun off from Justice League Detroit. That one was cobbled together, like many of the other blogs, from old crap on my ...nurgh... blog from when I did more there than comic book and movie review. Since I already cover Vibe's stories there, that one descended into music videos, pop-lock educationals, and a look back at 1983's D.C. Cab. Apologies for scrapping the bottle of the barrel on that.

Valkyrie! #2 (June, 1987)

Valkyrie ist der Codename von Lisellotte von Schellendorf, der Hauptrivale und Liebesinteresse von Airboy. Sie erschien zuerst im " Luft Fighers Comics" #2 (November 1942). Liselotte war ein deutsches Mädchen, das angehoben wurde, um " zu werden; das Anziehen und das Übel alles women" und " das erfahrenste und das tödlich von allem pilots". Als sie Erwachsensein erreichte, schloß sich sie theLuftwaffe als Führer des Airmaidens an. Das Geschwader bestand aus jungen weiblichen Piloten. Valkyrie war ein Aspilot und erreichte, viele verbündeten Piloten in ihren Aufträgen zu beseitigen. Das zum zu überleben war Airboy. Valkyrie erschien nur in den halben Dutzenden Geschichten, aber sie gelten als die Höhepunkte der Airboy Reihe. Während ihr Training, das Anziehen bearbeitet, das Training zu sein, um schlecht zu sein nicht tat. Als Airboy die Übel des Naziregimes zeigte, defected Valkyrie zu den Verbündeten. Sie nahm zu wieder steuern und zielte jetzt deutsche Piloten.

In der modernen Wiederbelebung des Titels, überlebte Valkyrie, um das Ende des Krieges zu sehen aber wurde durch einen Bann beeinflußt, der sie in verschobener Animation für Dekaden ließ. Sie tauchte auf, um die unterschiedliche Welt tot zu finden Airboy und sehr. Gleichwohl sie verbunden mit einem JuniorAirboy sich fand, haben Sohn der Vorlage und die zwei eine neue Serie Abenteuer eingetragen.

Valkyrie' s-Hauptwaffen sind die Flugzeuge, die sie steuert. Wenn aktiv auf Land, Valkyrie, baut auf Pistolen. Sie hat die Standardmilitärische Ausbildung der Kräfte des Drittes Reichs gehabt.

"Capture" war ein teil einer von "Prisoner Of The Past" durch Charles (Chuck) Dixon, Paul Gulacy & Willie Blyberg.

2006 Ryan Sook Valkyrie! Skizze

Ich hatte keine Idee Valkyrie war solch eine unverständliche Anti-heldin/schlechtes Mädchen/Villainess. I' ein Ventilator gewesenes VE, da ich ihr spätes ' las; Miniserie 80s durch Chuck Dixon und Paul Gulacy, obgleich Wahrheit zum zu erklären, I' m mehr ein Ventilator des Betrachtens sie als Messwert sie, aber we' ll gerade beiseite eingestellt dem. Valkyrie wird liebevoll hier von Ryan Sook übertragen und ruft Veronica Lake als Brunette zurück.
